Being a Florida sex crimes attorney is a job reserved for multi-talented individuals. The best sex crimes attorneys are detectives in disguise, studiously examining every angle of evidence and questioning its relevance. This is because sex crime charges are possibly the most serious in nature and a wrongful accusation could equate to more than just a lengthy prison sentence.
With the national crackdown on sexual assault underway, a sex crime conviction could lead to a lifetime of government surveillance, leaving many offenders to pay for their crimes even after doing their time.
In Florida, an organization known as The Florida Sex Crimes Investigators Association and most commonly referred to as FSCIA is being trained in the art of observation and discovery in sex crime related cases.
What The FSCIA Does
Founded in 2009, the FSCIA is a non-profit organization with more than 300 members being trained to investigate sex crimes. While a sexual crime can be defined as any crime sexual in nature, from an off color joke to the downloading of illegal porn, the 300 plus members of the FSCIA are mainly focused on finding and prosecuting suspects accused of:
• Sexual Child Abuse
• Sexual Battery
• Sex-Related Homicide
The organization is given access to a vast number of tools that are designed to aid them in the fact finding process.
Some of the tools include:
• DNA Database Information
• An In-depth Look at Pending Legislation
• An Internet Directory of Arrest Records
• Connections With Law Enforcement Agencies from Florida to California
This group of concerned citizens is being trained to track, arrest and locate suspects of Florida sex crimes, but that’s not all they do. They are also being trained to conduct interviews, uncover evidence in non sex crime related accusations such as robbery and murder and even examine DNA.
The organization is heavily influential in the passing of new sex crime related legislation and their network stretches from coast to coast and all across the nation.
Human trafficking is one of the many topics the FSCIA covers in their seminars and it is also an ongoing nationwide campaign. A recent three day Florida prostitution sting led to 44 arrests of suspects accused of human trafficking.
In addition to the FSCIA, Florida also operates a Human Trafficking Task Force for operations in cases where human trafficking is suspected.
What a Sex Crimes Attorney Does
With more than 300 people investigating sex crimes for the prosecution, a sex crimes attorney is the sole investigator helping the accused in building a criminal defense. A sex crimes attorney is the only Florida detective viewing a sex crime from the perspective idea that the client is innocent.
If the state were to eliminate sex crimes attorneys, wrongly accused offenders would have absolutely nobody compiling evidence to prove their innocence. This could potentially lead to tons of wrongful accusations and thousands of unnecessary arrests.
A sex crimes attorney is a necessary detective hired to examine the holes in an accusation. Without sex crimes attorneys, trials by jury would cease to exist and innocent people could wind up in jail, but that’s not all that could happen.
The introduction of new statutes and policies could also mean harsher punishments for convicts upon their departure from prison. In theory, this would mean that sex crime offenders could potentially suffer through a future where their civil liberties are taken and never returned. With nobody to defend them from the original accusations, wrongful sex crime accusations could easily become the modern day version of the Salem Witch Trials.
The Salem Witch Trials
One epidemic of mass hysteria led to the brutal murders of a great number of Salem Village residents, most of whom were women, all of whom were accused of witchcraft.
The problem with these trials is that these women accused of being witches had everybody in their village seeking evidence that would help to incriminate them while nobody was investigating these crimes of witchery from the perspective that the accused might actually be innocent.
Imagine how many gruesome murders could have been avoided if there had been a Salem Witch Trials attorney in place in the late nineteenth century.
The point is that every case has behind it a story and every side of that story needs to be examined in order to reach a just verdict. Without the possibility of reaching a just verdict, the law is but a blueprint for a world of chaos and slander.
