Criminal Justice Club Welcomes Pat Brown in Online Webcast
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.–LAWFUEL – Criminal Justice Law News –Colorado Technical University Online’s (Colorado Tech Online) Criminal Justice Club recently welcomed Pat Brown, internationally renowned criminal profiler, for an insightful Webcast discussion on criminal profiling, law enforcement, and other criminal justice matters.
“Profiling is not a matter of describing the general characteristics of a serial killer,” Brown told many students, faculty, and alumni who participated in the Webcast. “Real profiling is a thorough analysis of physical and behavioral evidence at the crime scene, which enables the profiler to develop specifics related to one particular case or set of cases. Students who learn these analytical skills can then go on to use them as detectives, psychologists, researchers, and in any other field requiring logic and a search for the truth.”
Pat Brown’s career as a profiler began when she suspected a young man who was renting a room from her was involved in a local homicide. Receiving no help from the police, she decided to investigate the matter on her own. Although the crime that inspired her interest remains unsolved, the success of her career choice was never in doubt. Over the next several years, Brown educated herself on sex offenders, serial criminals, abnormal psychology, investigative methodology and law enforcement, applying what she learned to real cases.
“Pat Brown represents the mission of Colorado Tech Online’s Criminal Justice Club– to provide our students relevant and industry-specific information pertaining to the criminal justice field,” said Lisa Ratliff-Villarreal, professor at Colorado Tech Online and founder of the Criminal Justice Club. “The Criminal Justice Club was honored to have the opportunity to have such a dynamic individual spend some one-on-one time with our students. It was a very memorable experience that our students will not soon forget.”
Brown has appeared as a guest on television shows such as America’s Most Wanted, I, Detective and the Montel Williams Show. She has also been interviewed by CNN, Fox News and MSNBC. In 1996, Brown founded the Sexual Homicide Exchange (SHE) to provide pro bono behavioral profiling and crime scene analysis services to law enforcement for unsolved murders, sexual homicides or serial predator cases. Recently Brown established another organization, the Coalition for Apprehending Predators Through Utilizing Resources Effectively (CAPTURE), to improve serial homicide investigation and reduce the number of serial killers at large.
“Criminal profiling has always fascinated me and listening to someone with such passion and expertise in the field only confirmed my own interest in that line of work,” said Toyanna Stapleton, a student at Colorado Tech Online who studies criminal justice with a specific focus on detective work.
