DOJ Antitrust Division Director of Litigation Mark Ryan rejoins Mayer Brown

LawFuel.com – Mr. Ryan to lead firm’s global Antitrust & Competition practice in fast-growing DC office

Washington DC, 4 May 2015 – Mayer Brown announced today that Mark W. Ryan has rejoined the firm as a partner in Washington DC, where he will lead the firm’s global Antitrust & Competition practice. Previously, he was the first-ever Director of Litigation at the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) Antitrust Division. Mr. Ryan went to the DOJ from Mayer Brown, where he held several key positions, including as a firm-wide litigation practice leader and as partner-in-charge of the firm’s Washington DC office.

“We are delighted that Mark chose Mayer Brown for his return to private practice and look forward to working with him in representing our multi-national clients on a wide range of competition and litigation matters,” said Mike Lackey, leader of Mayer Brown’s global Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice. “Mark is highly respected by leading competition authorities and practitioners for his merger enforcement expertise and litigation skills. During his time at the DOJ and in private practice, he has successfully first chaired many high-stakes trials. His impressive government enforcement experience and years of dealing with state and federal antitrust agencies, along with decades of litigation experience in the private sector, will significantly augment our already substantial antitrust and litigation resources.”

Mr. Ryan joined the DOJ’s Antitrust Division as its Director of Litigation in January of 2012, after the position was created to bolster the Antitrust Division’s trial readiness and effectiveness. At the Antitrust Division, Mr. Ryan served as lead trial counsel in several notable cases, including the DOJ’s victory over Apple in its e-book pricing suit and the agency’s successful challenges and settlements in the InBev/Grupo Modelo and US Airways/American Airlines mergers. In addition, Mr. Ryan was part of the Antitrust Division team that successfully sued American Express over anti-steering rules contained in its credit card agreements with merchants. Most recently, he was the Division’s lead trial lawyer in its challenge to the proposed merger of National Cinemedia and Screenvision, the two leading US cinema advertising networks. That transaction was abandoned by the parties less than a month before the scheduled start of trial in April 2015, a result described at the time by DOJ as “a testament to the strength of the Antitrust Division’s case and the hard work of our talented litigation team.”

“I am grateful and honored to have had the opportunity to serve with the outstanding men and women of the DOJ Antitrust Division,” said Mr. Ryan. “I am also excited to rejoin the exceptional lawyers at Mayer Brown, who value collegiality, excellent lawyering, and vigorous representation of their clients. The firm has built a leading international antitrust practice over several decades and I welcome the chance to contribute to its continued success ,” he added. “More and more nations are energetically enforcing competition laws and there is today unprecedented cooperation among authorities in different countries. Mayer Brown’s global practice is ideally suited to assisting firms that must grapple with the challenges of cross-border antitrust enforcement.”

“Mark’s addition from the DOJ, along with the recent arrival of Rajesh De from the National Security Agency, further illustrates that our DC office has become a premier destination of choice for talented government officials and successful laterals,” said Dan Masur, partner-in-charge of Mayer Brown’s Washington DC office. “In the past year, our DC office has added more than 30 first-rate new colleagues, including a former congressman, former DOJ and SEC officials, the former policy director for the Committee on Ways and Means and preeminent IP, FCPA, employment mobility and Banking & Finance lawyers.”

Mr. Ryan earned a JD from Duke University School of Law and received a BA from Syracuse University.
