LawFuel.com – A Desert Hot Springs woman was sentenced today to 24 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release for filing 73 false federal income tax returns and claiming approximately $89,808 in fraudulent refunds. Additionally, she was ordered to pay approximately $77,000 in restitution to the IRS.
Angelique Mobley, 45, received the sentence this morning from United States District Judge Virginia A. Phillips.
According to documents filed with the court, beginning in or before January 2011, and continuing through at least November 2012, in Riverside County, Mobley knowingly entered into a conspiracy to defraud the United States. As part of that conspiracy, Mobley devised a scheme to steal or otherwise obtain the names and Social Security numbers of living and deceased individuals. Mobley then used that information to file false tax returns claiming refunds from the IRS using TurboTax.
As part of her plea agreement with the United States Attorney’s Office, Mobley admitted she used the fraudulently obtained tax refunds for her own personal use, including the purchase of narcotics.
The case was investigated by IRS Criminal Investigation and the United States Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles.
