The Lawyer Behind #OscarsSoWhite & The Best Picture

The Lawyer Behind #OscarsSoWhite & The Best Picture

“American Sniper” ; “Boyhood” – best picture at the Oscars. We’ll, we don’t know because as this goes to air the Oscars are just beginning. But whatever the outcome, whatever movie is best picture this year, for lawyer April Reign they’re all just too white.

Reign is also a social media expert and blogger who has created some controversy by pointing out the obvious: the Oscars this year are just too white, notwithstanding ‘Selma’ and the fact that th emovie’s stars David Oyelowo and director Ava DuVernay were just about forgotten. She created the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag, noting “There were many performances both in front of and behind the camera by people from marginalized communities that I believe should have been recognize

Practicing in both the public and private sectors for over 20 years, April Reign left behind her legal career to pursue more creative activities as an author, content creator and digital media guru.

She is assertively placing herself in the “intersection of race, politics, and pop culture,”  which is reflected in her viaral hashtag.

She wasn’t the only one to make the observation, either. Her #OscarsSoWhite viral hastag was fine and all manner of celebrities followed suit.

Jimmy Fallon tweeted: “This year’s Oscar nominees are so white, they just became the frontrunner for the 2016 Republican nomination.”

As Forbes reported, the lack of diversity in this year’s Oscar nominations is no laughing matter. Eric Haywood, a writer for Fox ’s hit TV series “Empire ” believes taking a comedic approach to #OscarsSoWhite doesn’t give those in the Hollywood industry any incentive to remedy their lack of diversity. “Neil Patrick Harris, who is hosting the Oscars, has already publicly made jokes about it, which tells me that the diversity issue in general is already been seen as a source of ironic humor instead of a serious issue.”

And for those who forgot just who the best picture nominees actually were/are. Here they are again:

  • The Imitation GameNora Grossman, Ido Ostrowsky and Teddy Schwarzman

SelmaChristian Colson, Oprah Winfrey, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner

The Theory of EverythingTim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Lisa Bruce and Anthony McCarten

WhiplashJason Blum, Helen Estabrook and David Lancaster
