Lawfuel.net - No law or efforts from NGOs, governments or convervationists has been enough to save the Western Black Rhino from extinction.
It was today declared official extinct by The International Union for Conservation of Nature, which also said that two other subspecies of rhinoceros were close to meeting the same fate.
The two other rhinoceros that face the same fate as the Western Black Rhino are the Northern White Rhino of central Africa, which is now "possibly extinct" in the wild according to the group and the Javan Rhino "probably extinct" in Vietnam, after poachers killed the last animal in Vietnam in 2010.
The Northern White Rhino is now considered "possibly extinct" in the wild also. A small but declining population survives on the Indonesian island of Java.
IUCN also said today that a quarter of all mammals are at risk of extinction, according to its updated Red List of endangered species.
