Former Hollinger Inc. finance chief John Boultbee was a no-show in court today, prompting federal prosecutors in Chicago to say they may seek to extradite him from Canada to face charges he and others helped Conrad Black steal $51.8 million from Hollinger International Inc.
Boultbee was supposed to appear with Peter Atkinson, Hollinger Inc.’s former general counsel, to enter their pleas to federal charges of mail and wire fraud brought against them earlier this month. The hearing was rescheduled for tomorrow.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Kent said a lawyer claiming to represent Boultbee called late yesterday and said “other personal matters” prevented him from attending today’s arraignment.
“We think that indicates an unfortunate disrespect for this court,” Kent told U.S. District Judge Amy St. Eve.
