ATLANTA, Jan. 31 2005 – LAWFUEL – The Law News Network — Powell Goldstein LLP announced today the launch of Project Liberty, a pro bono project in which the firm is partnering with a client and TAPESTRI, Inc., to provide assistance to immigrants facing
gender-based oppression. TAPESTRI, Inc., Immigrant and Refugee Coalition
Challenging Gender Based Oppression, is a coalition of ethnically diverse
advocates in Atlanta, Georgia working on issues of violence against women.

James J. McAlpin, Jr., Chairman of the Powell Goldstein’s Board of
Partners and Executive Committee, stated, “This program underscores our Firm’s
long-standing commitment to pro bono and affords us the opportunity to serve
an indigent and underserved populations in our community.”

Natalia Parra, Program Co-Coordinator of TAPESTRI, Inc., stated that,
“Powell Goldstein’s creation of this program in conjunction with one of their
clients, a major Fortune 500 company, will provide the legal resources to help
address this serious problem. Tapestri is dedicated to ending violence and
oppression in immigrant and refugee communities, using culturally competent
and appropriate methods. As advocates for immigrant and refugee families
affected by domestic violence, sexual assault and exploitation, we are
committed to using education, community organizing, direct services and
advocacy to effect change in the lives of these families. Assuring that they
receive legal representation to protect their rights is critical to that
process.”

The project will be launched officially today at a kick-off reception for
the lawyers and organizations involved with the project. All lawyers who will
be representing the immigrants in this project will receive special training
through Tapestri and the Freedom Network Institute later this month.
