Let’s face it, regardless of how much fun bicycles can be, there are situations when danger can be involved. While dirt track races and stunt shows are all taken on an enter at your own risk basis, there are plenty of other accidents that happen beyond the rider’s control.
The summer I’ll never forget
After graduating high school, my friends and I decided we were going to spend the first four weeks of the summer traveling the country. With several areas in the state we wanted to visit, we decided to spend the last eight days of the trip in Texas before making our way home to Michigan.
After spending a few days in El Paso and a few other border towns, we made our way to the Dallas, Fort Worth area. With a couple of my buddies being avid bicycle riders, touring the area with pedals and handlebars was a must. There were several locations we wanted to see and plenty of trails for us to ride.
As the day went on, we were able to scratch name after name of places we wanted to see, both during the day and once it grew dark. As midday made its way towards late afternoon and early evening, we finally hit the downtown scene. We decided it would be cool to check one of the many local club areas. Not to have a drink, simply to see what was going on.
That was when the accident happened. We were riding on an empty sidewalk along one of the many side streets. We new a vehicle was approaching because of the headlights, but had no idea of what was about to take place. The can ran over the curb and onto the sidewalk, running over one of my friends before hitting the side of a building.
Right away, the driver and his passenger got out of the vehicle to see the damage. They circled their vehicle and appeared not to even realize they had hit a biker.
Two of my friends were doing all they could to comfort my friend who was in serious pain. My natural instinct was to use my phone and start taking pictures of the vehicle. As soon as they noticed me, the two guys asked what I was doing? I informed them of my friend on the ground to the side of us and they began to panic.
It didn’t take long after approaching them to realize they were intoxicated and smelled like alcohol. When the passenger told his friend they needed to leave before anyone showed up, I ran to their car to get the keys from the ignition. As soon as I had put them in my pocket, the first police officer turned the street corner and arrived at the scene.
As my friend was taken away to the hospital in an ambulance, I called his parents to let them know what had happened.
The first thing his father did was call The Doan Law firm legal aid specialists. I was shocked. Someone from the firm arrived at the hospital the next morning. They weren’t there to see if there was money to be won. They were there because they knew our families weren’t and they wanted to do all they could to help.
They not only visited to make sure we knew who they were. They had someone stay with us until my friend’s parents could arrive to the hospital. They bought us lunch, did everything they could to make sure we were as comfortable as possible. They made us feel safe during one of the scariest moments of our life.
