Britain’s top lawyers were feted in London yesterday with The Lawyer magazine’s awards, where the cream of the British legal crop were awarded with, what The Lawyer described as “inexplicable campness”. How come?

The Lawyer Awards went off in fine style last night – and what better way to represent the augustness of the legal profession than the hit-tastic 1980s sounds of Wham, Madonna and Frankie Goes to Hollywood?

One Essex Court’s Laurie Rabinowitz QC was unfazed by being crowned Barrister of the Year to the accompaniment of Yazz & The Plastic Population’s The Only Way is Up, while Trowers & Hamlins looked nothing less than flattered to bag the coveted Law Firm of the Year prize to the sound of ska legends Madness’s House of Fun.

Even James Ellington of Standard Chartered Bank commendably refused to acknowledge the associations of accepting In-House Banking Team of the Year accompanied by Madonna’s Like A Virgin.

Which makes the rumour that Partner of the Year Paul Maher of Mayer Brown Rowe & Maw responded to compere Marcus Brigstock’s observations regarding the associations with Frankie Goes to Hollywood by raising a certain finger all the more surprising. Relax Paul – don’t do it!
