Eversheds wins global Gulf Bridge appointment

LawFuel.com – International law firm Eversheds has been appointed as counsel for Gulf Bridge International (GBI) on all matters worldwide. The firm was appointed following the successful deal brokered for GBI on the first privately financed and constructed subsea cable by a consortium of investors from the Middle East.

GBI is dedicated to connecting all the nations of the Gulf to one another and to the rest of the world, using the latest fibre optic technologies. The GBI network is owned by GCC strategic investors who are building valuable infrastructure to serve the entire Gulf region.

Eversheds advised GBI on the private placement of shares in the company, currently being undertaken to raise around $445m, and has recently closed the negotiations of the cable construction contracts and other operating contracts, advising on telecoms and regulatory issues and advising in connection with structuring their global operations.

Amjad Hussain, partner in the Banking team in Doha, led the cross-office Eversheds team with support from: Farah Naim, Jaime Oon, Ali Shaikley and real estate partner Richard Birks in Doha; Abu Dhabi based partner Kuljit Ghata-Aura, along with Dawn Sanderson and Nidal Daraiseh on private placement issues; London based telecoms partner Neil Brown and James Walsh on telecoms issues; and London based finance expert Indraj Mangat.

Amjad Hussain commented:

“With Gulf Bridge International, we created a truly innovate business solution for the global subsea cable industry. It is the first time that such a cable network project has been put together with private investors. Our international team of advisors flew throughout the region and wider a field to negotiate different aspects of the project and provide the service required. Our appointment as GBI’s exclusive global counsel is testament to the way we’re working with them to meet their needs worldwide”.

Ahmed Mekky, CEO, Gulf Bridge International said:

“Eversheds’ responsiveness, commitment, flexibility and ability to mobilise resources in short notice proved invaluable to our efforts. Eversheds consistently demonstrated the leadership, and trusted business and legal advice we are looking for in this pioneering project”.
