Foley Attorney Leads Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee
TAMPA, Fla. – LAWFUEL – Law News Service- Foley & Lardner LLP announced today that senior counsel Melissa G. Thorn has been appointed the new chair of the Hillsborough County Bar Association’s Alternative Dispute Resolution (“ADR”) Committee.
For the next two years, Thorn will lead the committee of 50 attorneys as it works toward educating the Bar and the community about the various alternatives for dispute resolution, with a focus on mediation and arbitration.
Specific goals for the committee include serving as a liaison with ADR administrators in the court system and in the private sector; coordinating a peer mediation partnership project with the Hillsborough County School Board, including hosting an essay contest; providing opportunities for committee members to participate in CLE courses for mediation training/certification; working more closely with the Hillsborough County Bar’s Trial Lawyers Section and Solo/Small Firm Practitioners Committee; and volunteering for the Bar Grievance Mediation Program.
Thorn is a member of Foley’s Real Estate and Environmental Regulation Practices. She focuses her practice on land use and development, zoning and environmental litigation, corporate and administrative law, and risk management. She served as a legal intern to the Florida Senate, Committee on Natural Resources, and clerked for the ex-chief justice of the Florida Supreme Court. She also was appointed by the Florida Supreme Court to serve on the Mediator Qualification Board as an executive committee member and is an active member of the Environmental and Land Use Section of The Florida Bar.
From 1995-1998, Thorn received the Beverly Mcllure Environmental Law Scholarship for excellence in the area of environmental law from Florida State University College of Law. She also received the Florida Bar Public Service Fellowship from 1996 through 1998. In addition to achieving a Master of Science with highest honors from Newcomb College, Tulane University, Thorn earned her J.D. (cum laude) from Florida State University College of Law.
