In a very special start to their legal careers, three associates in the Jacksonville office of Holland & Knight were officially sworn in as lawyers by Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg last week in Gainesville, Fla.
Justice Ginsburg was in Gainesville to dedicate the Chesterfield Smith Ceremonial Classroom at the University of Florida Levin College of Law. Chesterfield Smith (1917-2003), one of the country’s most prominent lawyers, was founder and chairman emeritus of Holland & Knight and a 1948 graduate of the University of Florida law school.
Following the dedication ceremony, which was attended by more than 150 friends and colleagues of Smith, Justice Ginsburg swore in three Jacksonville associates who attended the dedication: Christine Fuqua, Georgianna “Annie” Gaines and Sarah Stoddard Toppi.
“Just before she swore us in, Justice Ginsburg commented, ‘It is now apparent, and I have always known, that women hold up at least half of the sky,'” said Toppi. “I found it inspirational and will certainly remember it.”
“Having recently graduated from UF law school, it was incredibly special to be sworn in at an event honoring one of our most accomplished alumni,” said Fuqua.
“We are so blessed to have such a memorable start to our professional legal careers,” said Gaines. “It was a great experience for us as young female lawyers just beginning our legal careers, not only to be sworn in by only the second female to sit on the U.S. Supreme Court, but also to be motivated by the inspiring accomplishments of Chesterfield Smith. It was an experience we will never forget!”
