LAWFUEL – Law Newswire – Lawfuel’s lead story, from The Age, reports that ‘Chemical Ali’, one of Saddam Hussein’s key henchmen, together with two other former Saddam lieutenants are to be executed, an Iraq Court has ordered. Ali Hassan al-Majid was convicted in relation to chemical gas strikes against Kurds.
An Iraqi court has sentenced “Chemical Ali”, one of Saddam Hussein’s notorious former henchmen, to death by hanging for genocide over the mass killing of tens of thousands of Kurds in 1988.
Another two defendants were also given the death penalty by the Iraqi High Tribunal today over the brutal military campaign known as Anfal in northern Iraq in which nearly 3,000 villages were razed to the ground and 182,000 Kurds killed.
Ali Hassan al-Majid, a cousin of the executed former dictator and widely known as “Chemical Ali” for ordering chemical gas strikes against Kurdish villages, was the final defendant to learn his fate.
He stood before the judge in silence as he was sentenced to death for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes by Iraq’s High Tribunal but later declared “Thanks be to God” as he was led out of the courtroom.
