Alexander Acosta, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, Joyce Dawley, Special Agent in Charge, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Julie Torres, Special Agent in Charge, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and Ken Mascara, Sheriff, St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, announced today that federal, state, and local authorities arrested thirty-one (31) people, including nine (9) on federal charges, who were part of crack and powder cocaine distribution networks throughout the Treasure Coast. Three (3) additional federal defendants are still at large.
The twelve (12) defendants facing federal charges are alleged to have conspired to distribute crack and cocaine powder and possessed with intent to distribute crack and cocaine powder, in violation of Title 21, United States Code, Sections 846 and 841(a)(1). In addition to the above-mentioned arrests, agents executed fourteen (14) state search warrants at various locations in St. Lucie and Martin Counties. The operation dubbed “Operation Unlucky Thirteen,” has presently resulted in the seizure of over 300 grams of crack cocaine, over 500 grams of powder cocaine, nine (9) firearms, and $197,000 in U.S. currency.
The twelve (12) federal defendants are charged in two complaints. The first charges four (4) defendants and focuses on the conspiracy headed by Derrick Cooper, a/k/a “Coop”, a/k/a “Black Boy.” The second complaint charges eight defendants and focuses on the conspiracy headed by Johnny Daniels, a/k/a “Black.” Mr. Cooper and Mr. Daniels are both in custody.
Mr. Acosta commended the investigative efforts of the Florida Department of Law Enforement, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, the Fort Pierce Police Department and the State Attorney’s Office for the 19th Judicial Circuit. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Robert H. Waters and Corey Steinberg.
