Abu Dhabi – LAWFUEL – Legal Announcement Service – DLA Piper is pleased to announce that Karl Tabbakh has joined its Abu Dhabi office as a partner in the corporate practice. Karl, who is fluent in Arabic, English and French, has significant experience advising on corporate matters in the Middle East and North Africa. His skills in the areas of domestic and international M&A’s, capital markets and joint ventures will increase the capabilities of the corporate team.
Prior to joining DLA Piper Karl was a partner in the business law group at Canadian law firm, McCarthy Tétrault. He has advised financial institutions, public and private corporates and government agencies in Canada, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa on a range of corporate matters, including M&A’s, multijurisdictional public offerings and private placements. Karl started his career in Canada with McCarthy Tétrault, leaving to work in the London office of Clifford Chance for a year before returning in 2001. He went on to work in the London office of McCarthy Tétrault for three years, returning to their Montreal office in 2004.
Karl, joined DLA Piper on 9 September and will work closely with Head of Corporate for the Middle East, Peter Monk, in continuing the rapid growth of the corporate practice in Abu Dhabi, which is an essential part of the regional Middle East offering.

News of Karl’s appointment follows an earlier announcement about the relocation of real estate partner, Duncan Pickering, from London to Abu Dhabi and brings the total number of partners in the office to seven. Duncan officially relocated to the Abu Dhabi office on 1 October, joining two real estate associates already on the ground.
The Abu Dhabi office, DLA Piper’s second in the UAE, will have grown to around 20 lawyers by the end of October 2008. The office currently has the largest team of projects and construction lawyers in the city and is involved in many of the high-profile real estate development, infrastructure and energy transactions in the emirates.
Across the Middle East DLA Piper has more than 120 lawyers operating from offices in Abu Dhabi, Doha, Dubai and Muscat.
