(LAWFUEL) – A 36-year-old Vietnamese man will appear in Sydney Central Local Court today following his arrest yesterday after he attempted to import up to 300 grams of heroin in his shoes.
The man was stopped by Customs officers for a baggage examination after he arrived at Sydney International Airport on a flight from Vietnam (26 September).
During the examination, a Customs detector dog gave a positive reaction to the man’s shoes where officers located two packages.
The matter was referred to the Australian Federal Police (AFP). An estimated 300 grams of a white powder, believed to be heroin, was contained in the packages.
AFP agents charged the man with importing a marketable quantity of a border-controlled drug contrary to section 307.2 of the Criminal Code Act 1995.
Further testing will confirm the substance, its purity and weight.
The maximum penalty for this offence is 25 years imprisonment and/or a $550,000 fine.
