NEWARK, NJ, January 5, 2010 – McCarter & English is pleased to announce that William S. Greenberg, a partner in the firm’s Newark office and a retired brigadier general, has been named the 2009 “Lawyer of the Year” by ALM’s New Jersey Law Journal for his work on behalf of military reservists and veterans.
Greenberg has been a lawyer for more than forty years with a focus on litigation and is former President of the New Jersey Association for Justice. Recently he has devoted much of his energy to helping New Jersey’s military reservists gain the services and benefits to which they are entitled. He established and chaired the New Jersey State Bar Association’s Military Legal Assistance Program in conjunction with McCarter & English.
“I am deeply humbled to receive this honor by the New Jersey Law Journal,” Greenberg said. “Many lawyers at McCarter and outside of our firm deserve much of the credit for the time and effort they have put into the work that the Military Legal Assistance Program provides. Their continued support in protecting the legal and human rights of the men and women who are bravely serving our country helps to keep the program going.”
The Military Legal Assistance Program, staffed by pro bono volunteer attorneys, provides needed assistance to members of Reserve Components called to active duty in Afghanistan and Iraq after September 11, 2001. Together with his colleagues at McCarter & English, Greenberg has represented more than 50 individual soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center during Medical Evaluation Board/Physical Evaluation Board proceedings. His work for the program earned him the New Jersey Bar Association’s medal of honor in 2009, the organization’s highest honor.
“Bill’s vision to support our soldiers in this way is a great example of how the law can help our communities,” said Michael P. Kelly, the chairman of McCarter & English’s Executive Committee. “We congratulate him on this great honor and continue to support his work toward such a worthy cause.”

Greenberg, who will continue as an active corporate litigation partner at the firm, has been an attorney since 1967. He served 27 years in the Army National Guard, retiring in 1994 as a brigadier general. Since 2001 he has served as Special Assistant to The Adjutant General of New Jersey for Homeland Security and Military Legal Assistance. Greenberg also served as special litigation counsel to The Adjutants General Association of the United States and was special litigation counsel pro bono to the National Guard Association of The United States. In August, he was given the opportunity to further his support of reservists’ interest, when he was appointed Chairman of the Reserve Forces Policy Board upon the recommendation of Sen. Robert Menendez.

In addition, Greenberg is a member of the New Jersey World War II Memorial Commission and serves as the first Adjunct Professor of Military Law at the Seton Hall University Law School. He was previously a Commissioner of the New Jersey State Commission of Investigation. Greenberg also served as Assistant Counsel to the Governor of New Jersey and as Commissioner of the New Jersey State Scholarship Commission.
