MCLEAN, Va.–LAWFUEL – Corporate Law News –Mary E. Kennard, Vice President and General Counsel of American University, is the 26th President of the Washington Metropolitan Area Corporate Counsel Association (WMACCA), the region’s premier professional association for in-house counsel.

With approximately 1,500 members from more than 500 corporations and private-sector organizations, WMACCA is a significant professional resource for in-house counsel in Washington, D.C., suburban Maryland, and Virginia. WMACCA is the largest regional in-house bar association in the United States, and the largest chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC).

Ms. Kennard began her one-year term as WMACCA President on Tuesday, January 30, 2007, at the WMACCA Annual Meeting. The meeting included a program featuring a panel discussion on “What’s Keeping the General Counsel Awake At Night?” The speakers for the program were Robert E. Bostrom, Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Freddie Mac; Allen C. Goolsby of Hunton & Williams LLP, author of the seminal treatise Goolsby on Virginia Corporations (2nd edition, December 2005); and Louanna O. Heuhsen, of Hunton & Williams LLP.

Previously, Ms. Kennard served as President-elect and Treasurer of WMACCA. Ms. Kennard plans to continue to build on WMACCA’s strengths – continuing education programs and resources for in-house counsel, networking opportunities, advocacy on behalf of the in-house bar, and outreach to law students. Among her goals for his term are to engage the chapter in a strategic planning process to “make sure our resources are aligned with members’ interests.”

At American University, Ms. Kennard is the chief legal counsel for the university and a member of the president’s cabinet. Since joining American University in 1995, she has, in addition to her university legal practice, served as the co-chair of the University’s Diversity Strategic Plan, served as the acting vice president of development in 1999-2000, co-anchored two award-winning video training tapes with the College and University Personnel Association, and served as a lecturer at numerous national conferences on law and higher education. She also teaches at the University’s school of law. Prior to joining American University, she served as Assistant University Counsel at the University of Pittsburgh, as Howard University’s University Counsel and Assistant to the Vice President for Legal Affairs, and as Legal Counsel for the University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College, and the Community College of Rhode Island. She is also on the Board of the National Association of College and University Attorneys. Ms. Kennard received her law degree from Temple University Beasley School of Law and an LLM in international and comparative law from the George Washington University National Law Center.

At the Annual Meeting, the following WMACCA officers were elected:

Mollie D. Roy, Associate General Counsel and Assistant Secretary of Freddie Mac, was elected President-elect.
Kevin S. Lapidus, Senior Vice President and General Counsel of YellowBrix, Inc., was elected Vice President (Programs).
Manik K. Rath, Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of LMI, was elected Vice President (External Relations).
Curtis L. Schehr, Senior Vice President and General Counsel of DynCorp International LLP, was elected Treasurer.
Joseph M. Titlebaum, General Counsel and Secretary of XM Satellite Radio Inc., was elected Secretary.
