Olswang announces it will open a new office in Berlin on 1 January 2007 at the prestigious Potsdamer Platz 1.

Olswang’s new three partner practice will open with a total staff of 13. Initially focusing on the real estate and finance industries, Olswang will look to build a practice which mirrors its sector focus in the UK and Brussels. In addition, Olswang’s Berlin office will benefit from its successful alliance with the US giant Greenberg Traurig LLP.

The specialisms of the Berlin office will be strongly supported by their counterparts at Olswang’s headquarters in London. The German partners will bring the real estate and corporate groups to 17 and 27 partners respectively, maintaining their considerable reputation in the industry, with both groups continuing to grow in size and market share.

Jonathan Goldstein, chief executive of Olswang, said, “In establishing a new office in Berlin, we are furthering our international strategy to support our clients as they expand across Europe and the rest of the world. The investments we have made over the past few years, predominantly in the real estate sector, have had impressive results for the firm and the teams have integrated seamlessly with the wider firm both culturally and commercially. We are confident that our new office will similarly operate, and we are pleased to be working in alliance with Greenberg Traurig as our clients and our business continue to grow.”

As Germany’s capital city, Berlin is a major economic and legal hub and is recognised as an important bridge to Middle and Eastern Europe. The significant experience of the office’s three partners, Dr Peter Diedrich, Dr Dieter Neumann and Cord-Henning Brandes, supports the drive of the firm and its clients in this market. The trio have already advised several clients of the firm.

Peter, who will manage the Berlin office, joins Olswang from EY Law where he has been a partner since 2004. Peter has developed an excellent real estate and M&A practice across Germany and Poland where he is also admitted as a lawyer, and is highly regarded for his work on real estate and related finance transactions. Additionally, Peter is Chairman of the German-Polish Lawyer’s Association.

Dieter joins from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer where he was a partner for 10 years. He is regarded as one of Germany’s leading lawyers for environment, planning and regulatory, and specialises in public private partnership law working for both government and private clients. Dieter has extensively worked on the introduction of a toll system for heavy vehicles on Germany’s autobahns.

Cord-Henning is a highly regarded notary with significant expertise working with domestic and international parties and is also an acting real estate lawyer. He joins the team from Brandi Dröge where he has worked since 2006, having previously been a partner at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer for 10 years. He has worked on real estate and M&A transactions including notarisations up to €500 million.

2006 has been a remarkable year for Olswang with the firm reporting revenues of £77.4m – up 22% on 2005. In May the real estate boutique Kanter Jules joined the firm and in July Olswang became the UK’s only firm with a full service bioscience offering.
Additionally the firm has enjoyed great success in its international alliance with Greenberg Traurig, and its other offices in Brussels and the Thames Valley, and opening another international office demonstrates the continued ambition of the partnership.

Commenting on the new office, David Stewart, international strategy partner at Olswang, said, “We are delighted to be opening a Berlin office with a team of this quality. The initiative is primarily client led given the expansion of the real estate market in Germany. We look forward to widening our international offering, in alliance with Greenberg Traurig.”
