Sugar, a principal in the firm’s Construction Group, has been elected president of the Board of Directors of the Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service (MVLS). He will serve for a one-year term, effective July 1, 2012.
MVLS provides free or low cost legal representation to Marylanders with limited income, and to nonprofits that serve low-income communities. Eligible clients are matched with volunteer lawyers who have the appropriate skills and expertise to provide quality representation. MVLS has a volunteer pool of 3,000 lawyers, providing services in every jurisdiction in the state.
Mr. Sugar has served on MVLS’s board since 2006 and was honored with the MVLS Leadership Circle Award in 2008.
He also serves as coordinator of Ober|Kaler’s robust pro bono program, directing firm resources in a wide variety of pro bono legal matters – criminal law, domestic relations, estates and trusts, children in need of assistance, landlord-tenant disputes and immigration. In 2009, his efforts helped garner for Ober|Kaler the MVLS Law Firm of the Year Award for providing pro bono legal service.
Mr. Sugar focuses his practice at Ober|Kaler on construction industry counseling and dispute avoidance and resolution. He represents institutional owners, including colleges and universities, hospitals and other health care providers. He’s an active member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys and its affinity group Higher Education Real Estate Lawyers. He’s also a member of the Baltimore Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors as well as the American, Baltimore City and Maryland State Bar Associations. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the Baltimore Bar Foundation.
