DLA Piper announced that Peter F. McLaughlin has joined the firm’s Boston office as of counsel in the Intellectual Property and Technology practice. McLaughlin joins from Morrison & Foerster.
McLaughlin advises US and international clients on their handling of personal information, with particular emphasis on international data transfers, new technologies, and the privacy and security of health data. He works with clients across industry sectors with respect to rules governing employee, customer and patient data; responding to regulators from the Federal Trade Commission, US Department of Health and Human Services and state attorneys general; and supporting post-enforcement compliance obligations.
Before returning to private practice, McLaughlin served as Assistant General Counsel – Privacy & Security – and global privacy director of Cardinal Health, Inc., a Fortune 20 healthcare company. In these roles, McLaughlin developed and orchestrated the firm’s global privacy and data protection program, including initiation of an EU binding corporate rules application.
McLaughlin is an active member of the American Bar Association, currently serving as co-chair of the Science & Technology Section’s Information Security Committee and previously served as co-chair of the Business Law Section’s Privacy, Security & Data Management subcommittee. He is on the advisory board of the Georgetown University Law Center’s Corporate Counsel Institute as well as Health Law360. He has his CIPP from the International Association of Privacy Professionals and is active in the American Health Lawyers Association.
