If you or a loved one has been the victim of a burn accident, you know all to well the pain is felt in more ways than just the physical aspect of it. More than just physical or bodily pain may be involved. There are many psychological issues resulting from burn injuries that may affect the quality of life of the rest of your life.
PTSD and Quality of Life
Any traumatic experience a person goes thru, be it a burn mishap, car fire, or being the victim of a crime can cause a condition known as Post Traumatic Stress. When one is accidentally burned severely, they undergo the whole spectrum of the hospital stay, skin grafting, disfiguration of the tissues. Also there is monetary stress one must go thru in incurring the extra costs of medical expenses. Added expenses for fuel to make all those trips to the doctor while you are in the healing process can add up. And don¢t forget lost wages may be unavoidable and also loss of sick leave and vacation time that could have been accruing if time off of work was not needed.
While one is going through the physical healing processes after a burn cataclysm, there are psychological wounds and issues to deal with too. Depression may be the result after undergoing such a stress. Self-esteem may be affected. Social anxiety issues may arise if there is a permanent dis-figuration. Pain and disfigurement may lead to the loss of friends. Many, many emotional issues have to be dealt with.
As mentioned, being a scald or melted skin victim can lead to Depression and Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. The ongoing care of a psychiatrist and psychologist may be needed by the burn victim to help resolve his emotional trauma. The use of long-term medication may also be needed.
The burn accident may leave you physically, emotionally, psychologically, and socially damaged. The ability to earn your living may even be compromised or at risk. It is not just the single burn victim that can be affected. Ones whole family will suffer the distress of seeing their loved one in pain and suffering. If the loved one is the bread earner of the family, the whole family’s financial well being may also suffer.
