BALTIMORE, MD January 11, 2010 – LawFuel.com Attorney News – The law firm Ober|Kaler announced today that Sanford “Sandy” V. Teplitzky, a principal in the firm, has been elected to the Board of Directors of Baltimore Reads for a three-year term.
Now in its twentieth year, Baltimore Reads, Inc. (www.baltimorereads.org) teaches adults the literacy skills necessary to function in society, achieve goals and develop individual knowledge and potential. Its mission is to offer instruction to adults in basic reading, writing, mathematics and employment readiness skills; operate a book bank that provides free books to teachers, schools, community organizations and families; engage in community outreach; and raise awareness of the adult literacy crisis in the Baltimore region.
“Literacy is the key to success, and Baltimore Reads provides critical, life-changing skills to many in our community,” says Mr. Teplitzky. “Their mission is clear and focused, and consistent with my prior service on the Baltimore County Board of Education. I am delighted to be joining in this effort.”
A prominent and nationally-recognized health lawyer, Mr. Teplitzky chairs Ober|Kaler’s Health Law practice, where he represents providers in reimbursement and fraud and abuse matters. Prior to joining Ober|Kaler, Mr. Teplitzky was with the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, where he served as counsel for the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Mr. Teplitzky is a member of the American and Maryland State Bar Associations, as well as the American Health Care Association. He is a founding Fellow and former president of the American Health Lawyers Association.
The recipient of numerous professional and industry recognitions and awards, in 2008, Mr. Teplitzky received the American Health Lawyers Association’s prestigious David J. Greenburg Service Award. Presented annually, the award is given to those lawyers who have made significant contributions to the AHLA over the course of their careers. Sandy was most recently named a 2009 Outstanding Healthcare Fraud & Compliance Lawyer by Nightingale’s Healthcare News.
Mr. Teplitzky is involved extensively in community service. He currently serves on advisory boards for The Chimes Foundation and Kids Helping Hopkins, and is a board member and former president of the Baltimore Jewish Council. He served on the Board of Directors of the Center for Poverty Solutions from 1998-2000 and was President of Action for the Homeless from 1989 to 1992. He served on the Baltimore County Board of Education from 1993 to 2003, and in 2004, was appointed to a special inquiry panel investigating financial practices of the Baltimore City Public School System.
Mr. Teplitzky holds degrees from Tulane University School of Law (J.D., with honor, 1975) and Washington University (A.B., 1972). He is a resident of Pikesville, Maryland.
