The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating claims that pop singer Michael Jackson molested an unnamed child in the late 1980s, department spokesman Jason Lee said.

The allegations come as Jackson, 45, prepares to defend himself in a child molestation case in Santa Barbara County, California. He was charged Dec. 18 with seven counts of committing lewd acts with a child under age 14 and two counts of administering an intoxicant to a child.

Jackson’s attorneys, Mark Geragos and Robert Sanger, didn’t immediately return voice mail messages left at their offices by Bloomberg News. Jackson has said he’s innocent of the charges.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office last month asked the police department to investigate the latest allegation, said Lee, who declined to give more details. The department’s juvenile division is handling the probe, he said.
