Continuing a Tradition of Public Service as Third NYSBA President from the Firm
NEW YORK, NY – January 30, 2009 – LAWFUEL – Legal Announcement Service – Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP is pleased to announce that its partner, Stephen P. Younger, has been elected to serve as the 113th President of the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA), the largest voluntary bar association in the country. Mr. Younger will become President-elect of NYSBA in June 2009 and will begin serving as President in June 2010. He will be the third Patterson Belknap partner to become President of NYSBA. He follows one of the firm’s founders, Chauncey Belknap, and its former partner, U.S. District Court Judge Robert P. Patterson, Jr., both of whom previously served in this role.
Mr. Younger is currently a member of the Executive Committee of NYSBA. He is a past Chair of NYSBA’s Commercial and Federal Litigation Section, having previously served as Chair of its Securities Litigation Committee and of its ADR Committee.
Mr. Younger served as Transition Director for New York State Attorney General, Andrew M. Cuomo. He is Counsel to the New York State Commission on Judicial Nomination which nominates New York’s Court of Appeals Judges, and is a member of the First Department Judicial Screening Committee. In addition, he serves on the Advisory Committee to the Commercial Division of the New York State Supreme Court.
With more than 25 years of experience, including extensive trial experience, Mr. Younger has an active practice in the complex commercial litigation field and is well-known for his international arbitration work. He regularly handles high-stakes disputes for a wide range of companies in the financial services industry. He represents law firms and other professional firms in defending against malpractice and other allegations. He is frequently called on to handle appeals in precedent-setting cases. Last year, he argued several appeals in the Second Circuit and in the Appellate Division. In 2009, he is scheduled to argue three appeals of major commercial law issues in the New York Court of Appeals.
Mr. Younger received his B.A. degree cum laude from Harvard University and his law degree magna cum laude from Albany Law School where he was Editor-in-Chief of the Albany Law Review. Following law school, he clerked for Hon. Hugh R. Jones of the New York Court of Appeals.
