Philadelphia, PA – March 13, 2012 – Pepper Hamilton attorney Nefertiri R. Smarr has been selected by the American Arbitration Association (AAA) to participate in the A. Leon Higginbotham Jr. Fellows Program. Created in 2009, the Fellows Program is a one-year program designed to offer the full breadth of the AAA resources to up and coming diverse professionals who are interested in pursuing a future career in alternative dispute resolution, and to allow the participants to immerse themselves in all aspects of alternative dispute resolution.
Ms. Smarr is an associate in Pepper’s Commercial Litigation Practice Group in the Firm’s Philadelphia office. She also serves as a member of the 2012 WIN! Planning Committee and volunteers her time with organizations that promote the well-being of disadvantaged children, including the Support Center for Child Advocates and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.Ms. Smarr is among 12 attorneys and practitioners from across the United States, as well as Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, that were selected as fellows.
The AAA named the program in honor of Judge A. Leon Higginbotham, Jr., one of the country’s most prominent African-American judges and a highly respected legal scholar and civil rights advocate. Higginbotham, who died in 1998, was the first African-American judge on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
