Washington, D.C. – December 19, 2006 – LAWFUEL – Law News Network – Pepper Hamilton LLP recently hosted “Women in Negotiation: Differences in Styles and Techniques.” The seminar was sponsored by the Tax and Business Forum of the Women’s Bar Association of the District of Columbia and was held at Pepper’s Washington office on November 9, 2006.
Panelists at the event included moderator Linda R. Singer, the Honorable Rosemarie Annunziata, Dr. Sheryl A. Friedley and Pepper partner Dusty Elias Kirk. The panel opened with a brief discussion of sex v. gender and how we create gender roles. Moving forward the panel dealt with topics including how to deal with a competitor, dealing with a difficult negotiator and how women negotiators deal with the issues of feelings and providing support.
Panelists talked openly about negotiation techniques, stereotypes and generalizations based on gender. For Ms. Kirk, negotiation was a skill that she has developed over time.
“Women find their strength – whatever it may be, humor, assertiveness or something else – and focus their negotiating skill in that area,” said Ms. Kirk.
Asked to define a difficult negotiation, Judge Annunziata observed, “There are two kinds of negotiators who are the most difficult – those who are overly confident and overly aggressive, and those who are insecure. A good negotiator has to be patient and have commitment to detail.”
Panelists wrapped up the luncheon with an all inclusive discussion about handling a difficult negotiator. Suggestions included addressing the problem directly and asking for more information to determine what is most important in the negotiations.
