WASHINGTON, Nov. 16 – LAWFUEL – The Law News Network — Cooley Godward LLP today announced that Michael S. Tuscan and Erich E. Veitenheimer III have joined the firm as partners in its Intellectual Property group, focusing on patent-related
matters for life science and biotechnology companies. They will be resident
in Cooley’s Washington, DC office. Both Tuscan and Veitenheimer join the firm
from Morgan Lewis’s Washington, DC office, where they were partners and co-
chairs in the firm’s life sciences intellectual property group.

Tuscan has spent his legal career serving the biotechnology industry in
the U.S. and abroad in all aspects of intellectual property law. He focuses
on the development, execution and enforcement of worldwide market exclusivity
strategies for products and technologies that are the core asset of
biotechnology companies of all sizes. He is also adept at counseling clients
to help turn those assets into business opportunities, such as capital
transactions, strategic partnerships, product acquisitions and the like. He
has extensive experience in the drafting and prosecution of patent
applications, business-focused opinions, due diligence, patent interferences
and oppositions. He holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, and is a former
patent examiner in the biotechnology group of the U.S. Patent and Trademark
Office.

Veitenheimer’s international practice focuses on the preparation,
prosecution and portfolio management of utility and plant patent applications,
the preparation of various types of opinions and licensing agreements, patent
interference, patent and trade secret litigation strategies/management and due
diligence projects. His clients include universities, international non-
profit research organizations and biotechnology companies of various sizes.
He holds a Ph.D. in Plant Genetics/Plant Breeding (major) and Statistics
(minor), is a former primary patent examiner in the biotechnology group of the
U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and previously was a biostatistician and
geneticist in industry.

Tuscan is a 1998 graduate of the Georgetown University Law Center. He
received a B.S. degree in Biology from Carroll College in 1984, an M.S. degree
in Microbiology from Illinois State University in 1986, and a Ph.D. in
Molecular Biology from Emory University in 1991. He is admitted to practice
in the District of Columbia and Maryland.

Veitenheimer is a 1998 graduate of the Georgetown University Law Center.
He received a B.S. degree in Agronomy, summa cum laude from Washington State
University in 1980, an M.S. degree in Plant Genetics/Plant Breeding from the
University of Wisconsin in 1982, on a WARF Fellowship, and a Ph.D. in Plant
Genetics/Plant Breeding (major) and Statistics (minor) from the
University of Wisconsin in 1985. He is admitted to practice in the District
of Columbia and Maryland.
