Weil Gotshal Makes Major Expansion of Patent Litigation Team in DC

May 22, 2008, NEW YORK – LAWFUEL – Legal Newswire – Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP announced today the addition of a three-partner patent litigation group who are joining the firm’s Washington, DC office. Mark G. Davis, Ronald J. Pabis, and Brian E. Ferguson will be joining Weil Gotshal from McDermott, Will & Emery, providing a significant new resource to Weil Gotshal’s global patent litigation practice, more than 100 lawyers strong. In addition to litigation expertise in complex patent and trade secret cases, the group will also significantly expand the firm’s International Trade Commission (ITC) and appellate capabilities.

Mr. Davis is a highly recognized litigator in the fields of intellectual property and international trade and has been noted as a leader in those areas in multiple publications, including Chambers & Partners and the PLC Which Lawyer? Yearbook. During his tenure at McDermott, Mr. Davis headed the firm’s ITC practice, participating in more than 40 investigations for both Fortune 500 companies and start-ups. Mr. Davis’ client roster spans a range of high technology businesses, including semiconductors, data storage, and consumer electronics.

Mr. Pabis brings to Weil Gotshal significant experience in litigating complex patent and trade-secret cases, as well as licensing matters and other technology-related disputes. He has assisted and acted as trial counsel on behalf of a wide variety of clients involving numerous technologies, including medical devices, integrated circuitry, semiconductor processing, and other computer-related technologies. Mr. Pabis also has substantial experience in ITC investigations.

Mr. Ferguson joins Weil Gotshal after having served as deputy head of McDermott’s Intellectual Property, Media & Technology Department. His practice is devoted to high-technology patent disputes and he has substantial experience in handling high profile patent appellate matters. He was lead appellate counsel for the prevailing party in the landmark Seagate case before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, which established a new standard for determining willful infringement. Mr. Ferguson appears regularly on television and in print as an expert legal resource commenting on patent matters and was recently named one of the top 50 IP lawyers under 45 by IP Law and Business.

“Mark, Ron, and Brian are highly respected in the patent and high technology fields,” commented Weil Gotshal chairman Stephen J. Dannhauser, “and we are very pleased to welcome them aboard. Their arrival is consistent with our aim of enhancing key practices in key legal markets when top talent is available.”

Added Matt Powers, global co-head of Weil Gotshal’s overall litigation department and former patent litigation practice leader, “the success of our patent litigation practice is unrivaled. Mark, Ron and Brian will help us build that success even further, particularly in the rapidly growing field of ITC investigations.” Weil Gotshal’s patent litigation group was honored last year by Chambers USA, the leading publication in the legal field, with its Award for Excellence in Intellectual Property Litigation, recognizing the practice as the foremost of its kind in the country.

“This key addition complements our firm’s robust mix of litigation and regulatory expertise resident in the Washington office,” remarked David Berz, the managing partner of Weil Gotshal’s Washington, DC office. “As tough litigation and regulatory challenges become more interdisciplinary and complex, our ability to field skilled lawyers across our entire platform positions Weil Gotshal among an elite group of international firms capable of delivering consistently excellent service worldwide.”
