Women Lawyers Predominate in Most Powerful List – Women in Law

LawFuel.co.nz – Legal Newswire – Lawyers predominate professionally in the Forbes ‘Most Powerful Women’ list, with Most Powerful Woman Number 1 being the president’s wife and attorney Michelle Obama.

Seven lawyers take positions in the list’s Top 20.

Mrs Obama, who is a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School, worked for law firm Sidley Austin where she met her husband. She graduated from Harvard in 1988 where she was active in the recruitment of professors who belong to minorities and she also worked for the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau, helping low-income tenants and others with housing issues.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (Number 5) specialised in patent and intellectual property law and handled pro bono child advocacy work when she worked at the Rose Law Firm in Arkansas. She also published legal writing on childrens law issues and she has been characterised as an important “scholar activist”. She also cofounded the Arkansas Advocates for Children and Familities, a children’s defence fund.

Angela Braly (Number 12), Chief Executive of Wellpoint, previously worked for St Louis law firm Lewis Rice & Fingersh and was also general counsel for RightChoice. She also managed the legal work required to set up the Missouri Foundatioin for Health, providing health care for uninsured people in that state.

Janet Napilotano, (Number 13) the Secretary of Homeland Security, is a graduate of Virginia School of Law and served as law clerk for a US Appeals Court Judge before joining Phoenix law firm Lewis & Roca.
