The Trust is a kaitiaki for ancestral taonga and manages complex business interests in the food and energy sectors, with assets valued at approximately $1 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ng\u0101 m\u0101t\u0101pono | Our values<\/strong><br>Whakapono &#8211; Inner belief in the T\u016baropaki vision<br>Kia \u016a &#8211; Commitment, diligence<br>Kia Manawanui &#8211; Courage, adaptability, strategic foresight and humility<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About the role<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>T\u016baropaki Trust is seeking an experienced General Counsel to provide trusted legal, governance and compliance leadership across a complex, values-led organisation with assets of around $1 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a pivotal senior role supporting the Chief Executive, Trustees and Independent Directors, and plays a central part in enabling strong decision-making, protecting intergenerational assets, and upholding tikanga M\u0101ori and the Trust\u2019s kaupapa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reporting to the Chief Corporate, People and Risk Officer, with a secondary reporting line to the Chief Executive, the General Counsel provides end-to-end legal, governance and compliance support across T\u016baropaki Trust and T\u016baropaki Holdings Limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Your impact<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a hands-on role combining in-house counsel, governance leadership and company secretarial responsibilities, and acts as the central point of accountability for statutory, regulatory and board-related matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key responsibilities include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Providing pragmatic, proactive legal advice across commercial contracts, joint ventures, investments, policy frameworks, disputes and risk management<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leading governance and company secretarial functions, including board and committee agendas, papers, minutes and annual governance planning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensuring statutory and regulatory compliance across M\u0101ori land law, trust law, companies and charities obligations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advising Trustees and Directors on fiduciary duties, conflicts of interest, legislative requirements and good governance practice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supporting strategic initiatives, investment decisions and land utilisation projects in alignment with kaitiakitanga and long-term value creation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Managing relationships with external legal, audit and professional advisors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What we\u2019re looking for<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will be a senior legal professional with strong governance experience and the judgement, cultural capability<strong> <\/strong>and credibility to operate confidently at Board level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will bring:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A law degree and significant post-qualification experience (likely 8+ years) in in-house, governance or regulatory advisory roles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sound knowledge of New Zealand governance frameworks, trust law and statutory compliance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Experience working with Boards, Trustees or Directors in complex organisations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strong commercial acumen and financial literacy, with the ability to assess risk and support investment decision-making<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cultural competence and confidence engaging within a tikanga M\u0101ori environment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exceptional communication skills and a collaborative, service-oriented approach<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Experience with M\u0101ori land governance, Te Ture Whenua M\u0101ori, and engagement with the M\u0101ori Land Court preferred.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Location &amp; Flexibility<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This role is based in Taup\u014d, with presence at Head Office important.
