Mayer Brown promotes 21 to partner worldwide

17 November 2016 – Mayer Brown announced today the promotion of 21 of its lawyers worldwide to partner. The appointments take effect January 1, 2017.

The new partners are:

Matthew J. Alexander, Litigation & Dispute Resolution, Washington DC

Based in Washington DC, Matthew J. Alexander is a partner in Mayer Brown’s Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice and a member of the firm’s White Collar Defense & Compliance practice group. Mr. Alexander focuses his practice on the counseling and defense of corporations and individuals in a variety of enforcement matters, including the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, federal securities and anti-money laundering laws and regulations, the False Claims Act, insider trading laws, as well as advising clients with respect to embargoes administered by the US Department of Treasury, Office of Foreign Assets Control.

Keri E. Borders, Litigation & Dispute Resolution, Los Angeles

Keri Borders is a partner in Mayer Brown’s Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice who is based in Los Angeles. She concentrates her practice on a variety of consumer class action, false advertising and privacy matters. Ms. Borders also has extensive experience in entertainment and business litigation matters and has been lead counsel in a number of actions, including business torts, profit participation, contract and licensing agreement disputes, copyright and trademark, and employment cases.

Massimo Capretta, Banking & Finance, Chicago

Massimo Capretta is a Banking & Finance partner in Mayer Brown’s Chicago office. Mr. Capretta’s transactional practice focuses on representing both financial institutions and companies across a broad spectrum of domestic and international financing transactions. He has been involved in transactions spanning a number of key industries, including automotive, heavy manufacturing, chemicals, metals and energy. Mr. Capretta has particular experience with domestic and cross-border trade receivables securitization, asset-based finance, factoring, supply chain/vendor finance, trade finance and other receivables monetization strategies.

Rohith George, Corporate & Securities, Chicago

Rohith George is a partner in the Business & Technology Sourcing practice. His practice focuses on helping companies more efficiently utilize their operating budgets, including in the areas of traditional outsourcing, emerging technologies, and supporting the technology and business services components of corporate transactions. Mr. George has represented clients in outsourcing and the use of emerging technologies in a broad range of business process and technology functions. Mr. George is currently based in Chicago and will be relocating to Mayer Brown’s Palo Alto office in early 2017.

Erika Gosker, Employment & Benefits, Chicago

A partner in Chicago, Erika Gosker is a member of Mayer Brown’s Employment & Benefits practice. She has a particular focus in the pension investment area, representing sponsors of private real estate funds that are offered to institutional investors, including benefit plan investors and governmental plans. In these matters, Ms. Gosker handles the ERISA aspects of the structuring and formation of the fund, including negotiating with the prospective investors regarding their ERISA-related comments to the fund documents.

  2. Magnus Karlberg is a New York-based partner in Mayer Brown’s Corporate & Securities practice. He focuses on US and cross-border mergers, acquisitions, buyouts, investments, divestitures, joint ventures and similar strategic partnerships as well as other corporate and securities law matters. Mr. Karlberg advises clients worldwide in a wide range of industries, including banking & insurance, life science & pharmaceuticals, chemicals, technology, transportation and energy & natural resources.

Emily Petrovic Li, Wealth Management, Chicago

Emily Petrovic Li is a partner in the Wealth Management practice group in the Chicago office of Mayer Brown. She concentrates her practice on sophisticated tax and planning advice for high net worth individuals and families. Ms. Li has extensive experience and expertise in estate planning, estate administration, trusts and estate litigation, and charitable planning. She represents family business owners, corporate executives and multi-generational families.

Stephen Lilley, Litigation & Dispute Resolution, Washington DC

A Litigation & Dispute Resolution partner based in Washington DC, Stephen Lilley focuses his practice on helping clients navigate cutting-edge and interrelated litigation, regulatory, and policy challenges. A member of the firm’s Supreme Court & Appellate practice, Mr. Lilley litigates complex appeals and dispositive motions, and develops strategies to manage legal risks and to shape regulatory policy. He has extensive experience litigating and advising clients on cybersecurity and data privacy, and consumer financial services matters.

Matthew A. McDonald, Tax Transactions & Consulting, Chicago

Matthew McDonald is a partner in the Tax Transactions & Consulting practice of Mayer Brown’s Chicago office. As a member of the firm’s Funds & Asset Management practice, Mr. McDonald regularly represents fund sponsors in all aspects of the structuring and operation of private investment funds, with a particular focus on real estate and real estate-related assets. He also represents a variety of taxable, tax-exempt and non-US investors in structuring tax-efficient investments in real estate, private equity and hedge funds. Mr. McDonald’s experience includes matters involving the formation and operation of partnerships, limited liability companies and real estate investment trusts, foreign investment in the US under FIRPTA and outbound investment in foreign jurisdictions.

William G. McGarrity, Tax Controversy, Chicago

William McGarrity is a Tax Controversy partner in Mayer Brown’s Chicago office. Mr. McGarrity represents clients in all stages of federal tax controversies, including examination, administrative appeals, and litigation. His work encompasses issues related to transfer pricing, cost sharing agreements, valuation, treatment of goodwill and going concern value, debt-equity characterization, economic substance, and administrative procedure as applied to the IRS regulatory process. Mr. McGarrity has experience litigating major corporate cases in the areas of transfer pricing and debt-equity characterization.

Soledad G. O’Donnell, Litigation & Dispute Resolution, Chicago

Soledad O’Donnell is a partner in Mayer Brown’s Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice and a member of the International Arbitration and Global Energy groups, focusing primarily on international arbitration disputes in Latin America. She frequently advises clients on a wide range of arbitration and litigation matters, including energy-related contractual and commercial issues. Ms. O’Donnell served as a law clerk for the Honorable Richard C. Tallman, United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. She is also a Center for Conflict Resolution Certified Mediator and a native Spanish speaker.

Robert Pluta is an Intellectual Property partner in Chicago. He concentrates his practice in the areas of patent litigation, strategy, and clearance. Mr. Pluta is a trial lawyer with over 10 years of experience trying and litigating patent cases in district courts and the International Trade Commission. He has served as lead counsel in more than 50 inter partes reviews before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. Paulo Rage is a partner in the Rio de Janeiro office of Tauil & Chequer Advogados in association with Mayer Brown. He is qualified to practice in Brazil and Portugal and is fluent in English, Portuguese, Spanish and French. In addition to his Brazilian corporate practice, Mr. Rage has significant experience in planning and structuring in tax, corporate, regulatory and labor matters, particularly related to Mozambique law. He also advises clients in complex cross-border projects involving the following sectors: infrastructure, construction & engineering, energy and oil & gas, mining, heavy industries and agriculture.

Sarah E. Reynolds, Litigation & Dispute Resolution, Chicago

Sarah Reynolds is a Chicago and Palo Alto-based partner in Mayer Brown’s Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice. She divides her dispute resolution practice among defending technology and internet-based companies in class and individual actions, as well as in domestic and international arbitrations. Ms. Reynolds’ technology-related litigation experience includes false advertising, digital media, e-commerce, breach of contract, user-generated content, antitrust, and shareholder and securities issues. She also assists clients with complex environmental tort issues. Jennifer Rosa, Litigation & Dispute Resolution, New York

Jennifer Rosa is a Litigation & Dispute Resolution partner in New York. She represents financial institutions and multinational corporations in complex commercial and securities litigation in federal and state courts, as well as in government and internal investigations. Ms. Rosa concentrates on the areas of banking and financial services, including actions involving allegations of violations of the securities laws or other statutes, fraud, misrepresentation, or breach of contract in connection with complex financial instruments and transactions. She focuses a significant portion of her practice on the representation of clients in the residential mortgage-backed securities space.

Susannah L. Schmid, Banking & Finance, Chicago

A Chicago-based partner in Mayer Brown’s Banking & Finance practice, Susannah Schmid concentrates her practice in the area of structured finance. She is experienced in representing issuers and investment banks in a variety of securitization and other structured finance transactions. Ms. Schmid has represented clients in private and public asset-backed securities offerings, commercial paper funded facilities and other forms of financing involving a wide variety of assets. She also is experienced in representing financial institutions, with respect to purchases, sales and servicing of all types of mortgage assets.

Jonathan Stone, Litigation & Dispute Resolution, London

A Litigation & Dispute Resolution partner in Mayer Brown’s London office, Jonathan Stone is a member of the Construction & Engineering practice. He advises clients (including architects, engineers, consultants, contractors and suppliers) on all aspects of construction and engineering law. A significant part of his work involves advising insurers and professionals in the defense of professional indemnity claims. Mr. Stone also advises insurers on policy coverage issues arising out of various types of construction policy, including professional indemnity, public liability and CAR policies.

Eugene Wong, Real Estate, Hong Kong

Eugene Wong is a Real Estate partner in the Hong Kong office of Mayer Brown JSM. Oliver Yaros is an Intellectual Property partner in Mayer Brown’s London office. He advises clients on TMT, outsourcing, IT, data protection and privacy, e-commerce and IP transactions and issues. Mr. Yaros acts on global financial industry utility projects, technology and business process outsourcing projects and IT systems procurement transactions.
