26 May – LAWFUEL – The Law News Network – Linklaters has been named European Tax Litigation Firm of the Year and Belgium Tax Firm of the Year at the inaugural International Tax Review European Awards, which were held last night at Claridges hotel in London.

Linklaters fought off stiff competition from many eminent law firms for the European Tax Litigation Firm of the Year award. The strength of our market leading tax and litigation practices across Europe and the ground-breaking cases we have been involved in this year, including 3G VAT litigation, CFC litigation, and many more across the UK, Germany, Belgium and France, helped to clinch the award.

Guy Brannan, Global Head of Tax at Linklaters, commented:

“We are delighted to win this award, which recognises the value we bring to our clients through our combined international tax expertise and our litigation practice, providing them with a high level of both technical tax and tactical litigation advice across the world. I would like to thank our clients with whose legal and tax teams we have worked for having placed their confidence in us in these important cases.”

The Belgium Tax Firm of the Year award confirms Linklaters’ premier status in the Belgium tax market, not only amongst other law firms but also accountancy firms. Linklaters has advised on key deals such as the EUR 9.2 billion merger of Interbrew and AmBev to form the world’s largest brewer, and the Belgacom IPO, which was the largest IPO ever in Belgium. The other short-listed firms were Allen & Overy, Baker & McKenzie, Deloitte, Liedekerke Wolters Waelbroeck Kirkpatrick, Loyens and Stibbe.

Ivo Onkelinx, Head of Tax at Linklaters in Belgium, commented:

“Linklaters’ Belgian office has put great emphasis on its tax capabilities from the outset. This resulted in the development of a long established and large tax practice in Belgium which was recently described by Chambers as a “top notch team … renowned for its top quality advice …. that rivals envy for its great chemistry and outstanding partners”.

“We are very happy that our continuous efforts to stay at the top are now being confirmed and rewarded by winning the first Belgium Tax Firm of the Year award. This has only been possible due to our clients and the dedicated work and motivation of all members of the tax department whom I wish therefore to thank and congratulate.”

Linklaters was also short-listed for European Tax Firm of the Year and Law Firm of the Year in France, Germany, Russia and the UK.
