LAWFUEL – The Legal Newswire – PHOENIX – The State Bar of Arizona recognized two federal prosecutors and a former U.S. Attorney for outstanding contributions to the legal profession at the 74th annual State Bar Convention today at the Westin Kierland Resort and Spa in Scottsdale.
Paul K. Charlton, of the law firm Gallagher & Kennedy and formerly the U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona from 2001 until January 2007, was awarded the Michael C. Cudahy Criminal Justice Award. The award, established in 2006, “recognizes a criminal law prosecutor who during his
or her career has worked tirelessly to advance the principles of criminal justice by representing the public’s interest with integrity, fairness, tenacity, creativity, brilliance and, above all, professionalism.”
Prior to joining Gallagher & Kennedy this year, Paul K. Charlton served as the U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona for six years after being nominated by President George Bush in 2001. As U.S. Attorney, Charlton focused on terrorism, illegal immigration, public corruption, and reducing violent crime on Arizona’s 21 Indian reservations.
Christina Cabanillas, Assistant U.S. Attorney and appellate chief for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, received the Continuing Legal Education Award. The award is for outstanding contributions to the State Bar’s Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Program. According to the Bar, “Cabanillas has consistently volunteered her time and expertise to conduct legal presentations to local and national audiences. In the last year she served as instructor for several State Bar seminars, including the Minority Bar Convention, and authored two Bar publications.”
Patrick J. Schneider, Assistant U.S. Attorney who served as the criminal division chief for the U.S. Attorney’s Office from 2001 to 2006, received the Distinguished Public Lawyer Award. The award is given to an Arizona lawyer who has had a distinguished career in public and has performed significant community service. Prior to his service as criminal chief, Schneider served 11 years in violent crimes and drug enforcement. Schneider served as chair of the State Bar Public Lawyers
Section, and as president of a non-profit organization that investigates and prosecutes organized crime groups around the world.
