TUCSON, Ariz. – LAWFUEL – The Law Newswire – Agripina Rey-Carrasco, 46, of Phoenix, was sentenced here today to 15 months in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, by U.S. District Judge Raner C. Collins. Her daughter and co-defendant, Aracely Carrasco-Rey, 27, also of Phoenix, was sentenced to 18 months in prison and three years of supervised release on June 25, 2007. Both had pleaded guilty to conspiring to transport an illegal alien.
On August 18, 2006, Rey-Carrasco and Carrasco-Rey presented themselves for admission into the U.S. at the port of entry in Nogales, Ariz. They were accompanied by a 10-year-old boy who Rey-Carrasco claimed was her son. Carrasco-Rey presented an Arizona birth certificate for the boy claiming that he was her brother. Rey-Carrasco claimed that both she and the child were U.S. citizens. Further investigation revealed that the child was a Mexican citizen. Rey-Carrasco admitted that she and her daughter agreed to smuggle the child into the U.S.
Both Rey-Carrasco and Carrasco-Rey are legal permanent resident aliens who will be turned over to the Department of Homeland Security for deportation proceedings at the conclusion of their federal prison sentences.
The investigation in this case was conducted by Customs and Border Protection, Nogales, Ariz. The prosecution were handled by Cynthia R. Wood, Assistant U.S. Attorney, District of Arizona, Tucson, Ariz.
