The outstanding bravery of two Metropolitan Police explosives officers who risked their lives disarming terrorist bombs in central London this summer has been recognised by the Queen.
The two – Paul Humphrey and Gary Wright – separately disarmed and made safe explosive devices in two vehicles, one in the street and the other in a car park. It was announced today [8.12.07] that Paul Humphrey will receive the Queen’s Gallantry Medal and Gary Wright the Queen’s Commendation for Bravery.
MPS Commissioner Sir Ian Blair described the two men as ‘brave, almost beyond belief’ and said he was humbled by their actions. ‘They responded in the absolute finest traditions of the Metropolitan Police Service, putting their own lives at risk to save others. I am sure that when Londoners hear the full account of what happened they will share in the Met’s immense pride at the cold courage shown that night.’
