Brian Dickey KC

LawFuel Power List 2005

No. 23

Auckland Crown Solicitor (2015-2023), Dickey was the first Māori to hold that position Dickey led NZ’s highest-profile prosecutions including Grace Millane’s murder trial and involvement in the Polkinghorne case. His 30 years of criminal and commercial litigation, SFO panel membership since 2010, and white-collar crime expertise following the GFC demonstrate versatility beyond courtroom advocacy.

Most significantly, Dickey now leads Crown negotiations with Ngāpuhi hapū and Hauraki iwi—a role requiring legal excellence, cultural competence, and political sensitivity. His move to Bankside Chambers (2023) and immediate appointment to high-stakes Treaty negotiations signal the Crown’s preference for closers when historical and political stakes are highest.

With Waikato-Tainui whakapapa and demonstrated commitment to addressing systemic justice issues affecting Māori, Dickey represents institutional power and has a strong focus on criminal law, including regulatory criminal prosecutions. He lead Crown negotiations with Ngāpuhi hapu and Hauraki iwi and undertakes a key role in Treaty issues.
