Sentencing should be clear, consistent and reflect community expectations.
That’s why Labor will completely review and rewrite Victoria’s sentencing laws to make sure they meet the needs of modern Victoria.
The Attorney-General today announced the appointment of the Honourable Justice Karin Emerton as the Chairperson of the Board of the Sentencing Advisory Council.
Justice Emerton will lead the independent review – the first since the Sentencing Act came into effect in 1992.
The review will consider whether the Act continues to meet community expectations, how sentencing can better support victims and ensure their voices are heard.
Following the review, Labor will rewrite the Act.
The Council will consult widely so both experts and the public can provide feedback throughout the review.
Justice Emerton brings more than 30 years of legal experience to the role.
She most recently served as the President of the Court of Appeal – making history as the first female President in the Court’s history.
She previously served as a judge of the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of Victoria.
She was appointed Senior Counsel in 2007 and served as Crown Counsel.
Justice Emerton starts as Chairperson today.
