DALLAS (LAWFUEL) – Cowles & Thompson PC is strengthening its intellectual property and international expertise with the addition of J.F. (Jim) Chester as a Shareholder. Mr. Chester chairs the firm’s Intellectual Property and International Business and Trade Practice Groups, and is a member of the Corporate and Business Practice Group.

Mr. Chester has more than 10 years experience advising Fortune 500 companies, start-ups, and mid-sized companies regarding intellectual property protection and licensing, international business and trade legal matters, and business formation and transactions.
A licensed U.S. Customs Broker and a Certified Customs Specialist, Mr. Chester routinely represents companies before U.S. Customs & Border Protection, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the U.S. Copyright Office, the U.S. Department of Defense Trade Controls, the Office of Foreign Asset Controls, the U.S. International Trade Administration and other federal and international governing bodies and agencies.
Mr. Chester teaches courses on International Trade Law and International Business Transactions as an adjunct professor of law at Baylor University Law School. He formerly served as an adjunct professor at the University of Dallas College of Business, teaching a course the legal environment of business. He has served as a director or general counsel for several non-profit entities and foundations. He has served as an advisor to the Global Business program at the University of Dallas and the Foreign Trade Institute at the University of Texas at Dallas.
After earning his law degree from the South Texas College of Law, Mr. Chester went on to earn a Master of Laws degree in International Economic Law from the University of Houston Law Center, and study graduate tax law at Southern Methodist University’s Dedman School of Law. He earned his undergraduate degree, with high honors, in economics and political science from Texas A&M University at Commerce.
