(LAWLUEL) – A 25-year-old Malaysian man will appear in Southport Magistrates Court today charged with importing approximately two kilograms of heroin concealed in his luggage.
After arriving at Gold Coast Airport on Saturday (13 September) on a flight from Kuala Lumpur, the man was stopped by Customs officers who conducted a search of his luggage and noticed that one of his bags seemed excessively heavy after it had been unpacked.
An x-ray of the man’s luggage revealed an image consistent with a possible drug concealment and further investigation allegedly revealed a quantity of white powder concealed in a false compartment in the man’s suitcase.
Preliminary testing of the powder indicated the presence of heroin.
The man was referred to the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and charged with importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug contrary to section 307.1 of the Criminal Code Act 1995.
Further testing of the substance will determine the exact weight and purity of the drugs.
The maximum penalty for this offence is an $825,000 fine and/or life imprisonment.
