On June 24, Presiding Partner of Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP, Robert Joffe, was presented with the American Jewish Committee's Learned Hand Award at a tribute dinner held at New York City's Pierre Hotel. The Learned Hand Award was established to honor the memory of Judge Learned Hand, a distinguished individual known for his legacy as an extraordinary jurist, philosopher and poet of liberty. The award was created to cite leaders in the legal profession for excellence and for their contributions to the legal community. The AJC is an organization that supports the cause of advancing democracy, pluralism and mutual understanding. Bob Joffe has worked continuously throughout his career in the area of civil rights and international human rights. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and serves on the Board of Directors of Human Rights First. Bob participated on a mission to Kenya on behalf of the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights and testified on Kenya's human rights issues and in support of the Civil Rights Act of 1991. Since the early 1980s, he has been part of the Cravath team representing the minority and women firefighters in Birmingham, Alabama in pro bono civil rights litigation, including before the United States Supreme Court.
