DALLAS (LAWFUEL) – Attorney David Segrest, a partner in the Dallas office of Gardere Wynne Sewell LLP, was given the 2009 Distinguished Alumnus Award by the Texas Tech University School of Law.
Mr. Segrest, who was in the law school’s first graduating class, was honored at the annual Texas Tech University School of Law Gala on Feb. 20. The award was in recognition of Mr. Segrest’s professional success, as well as his commitment to the law school. He currently serves as president of the Texas Tech University School of Law Foundation Board and serves on the dean search committee.
“The Distinguished Alumnus Award is more than a token of thanks,” says Steve Good, Gardere’s managing partner. “David is only the 15th person to have received this award, and it is given only to those alumni who have both achieved professional success and helped move forward the mission of the law school as a leader, committee member, donor and advocate. David has done all of this and more, and his service is something all of us at Gardere are rightfully proud of.”
Gardere has a proud and strong association with Texas Tech. The firm has 17 attorneys who graduated from its law school, and 12 who received their undergraduate and/or master’s degrees from the university.
Mr. Segrest received both his B.A. (1967) and his law degree (1970) from Tech. After graduating in the law school’s first class, he received the second-highest score on the July bar exam. After law school, he clerked for the Honorable Byron Skelton, Judge of the U.S. Court of Claims in Washington, DC.
“I am humbled and grateful for this award,” Mr. Segrest says. “I was fortunate to have received an excellent education, from Texas Tech’s law school, which has provided many opportunities, both personal and professional. It’s been an honor to serve the Texas Tech School of Law.”
Mr. Segrest represents and counsels businesses, both public and private, and entrepreneurs in a variety of corporate matters. He handles contract negotiations, creation of business entities, acquisitions and mergers, workouts, debt and equity financing arrangements, among other business related matters. He has served in many leadership roles at Gardere, including managing partner.
