BALTIMORE, October 12 LAWFUEL – Law, attorney, legal, law firm news– Robert J. Mathias, chair of the national Litigation practice group of Piper Rudnick LLP, will receive a 2004 Leadership in Law award from The Daily Record, the law firm has announced.

He will be recognized at an awards luncheon in Baltimore on November 12.

The Leadership in Law awards are given each year by The Daily Record, the newspaper serving Maryland’s business and legal communities. The publication notes, “The award recognizes those individuals whose leadership, both in the legal profession and in the community, has made a positive impact on our state. Recipients of this award demonstrate outstanding achievement in these key areas: achievement in law; involvement in the profession; support of the community; and mentoring.” Nominations are solicited from across the state and a panel of judges selects 24 winners who represent every region of Maryland.

Bob Mathias is chair of Piper Rudnick’s national Litigation practice group. His primary areas of practice are business litigation, intellectual property litigation, and white collar criminal advice to corporate clients.

His business litigation practice focuses on complex financial transactions, telecommunications, financial services, real property, and contract cases. He represents both plaintiffs and defendants. His intellectual property litigation practice includes trademark, copyright, and patent litigation. His white collar practice includes the representation of corporations and individuals in all stages of federal and state civil and criminal proceedings, as well as internal corporate investigations, legislative proceedings and regulatory enforcement proceedings.

His many clients include a major telecommunications company, a major Internet service provider, an international insurance company, as well as defense contractors, an apparel company, financial services holding companies, insurance agencies, and a former assistant to the President of the United States.

Mr. Mathias is listed in Chambers 2004: America’s Leading Business Lawyers; in Who’s Who in American Law; and in The Best Lawyers in America.

He received his law degree from Harvard and his undergraduate degree from Yale, cum laude. After law school, Mr. Mathias clerked for the Honorable Joseph H. Young, U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland. He served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland from 1983 to 1988.

Within the firm, in addition to serving as chair of the Litigation practice, Mr. Mathias is respected as a mentor of young attorneys. He also serves on the firm’s Executive, Policy, and Strategic Planning committees.

Mr. Mathias is also known for his generous participation in Baltimore civic life. Among his many activities, he serves on the board of the Calvert School (and served as its president from 2001 to 2003); as a trustee of the Baltimore Museum of Art; and as a director of the Community Mediation Program.
