RICHMOND, Va. LAWFUEL – Best for law news – McGuireWoods LLP announced it will match employees’ contributions to relief efforts for tsunami victims in Asia.

“This horrific event impacted so many lives in so many countries. Many of our employees wanted to make a contribution. The law firm also wanted to make a contribution to assist in relief efforts, by matching our employees’ donations, the money will go further,” William J. Strickland, McGuireWoods’ managing partner, explained.

The law firm, which has approximately 1500 employees in its 15 offices, began the collection on Friday, December 31, 2004. By Tuesday, January 4, 2005, McGuireWoods employees had already donated more than $20,000. The firm will continue to collect money until January 15.

“The outpouring of everyone’s generosity within McGuireWoods is heartwarming,” Strickland said. “We hope other law firms will follow our lead and set up a similar matching fund for their employees.”

McGuireWoods’ matching fund contribution will go to AmeriCares, a charitable organization that has been ranked as one of the top ten best run non-profits in the U.S. AmeriCares stated that 100 percent of the money donated to it for tsunami relief efforts will go directly to supplies for tsunami victims. The firm, however, is allowing its employees to make their contributions to the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization of their choice.
