Ms. Gillan was appointed to the PCAOB Board in October 2002. As a founding member of the PCAOB, Ms. Gillan has been involved in all aspects of the Board’s development, from its initial start-up phase through its current regulatory activities. During her tenure, she has spearheaded various initiatives designed to bring the views of investors and public companies into the debate of auditing issues. For example, she recently led roundtables around the country discussing the impact of Sarbanes-Oxley Section 404 on smaller public companies.
Prior to her appointment to the PCAOB Board, Ms. Gillan worked in the pension field for more than 16 years, specializing in trust, securities, governance, policy and operational matters. Ms. Gillan served for six years as General Counsel to the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS). She as a principal architect of CalPERS’ corporate governance program, managed all aspects of the fund’s legal services, and oversaw a staff of internal auditors.
Ms. Gillan was named as one of Business Finance Magazine’s 50 top influential people for 2005. She is a frequent speaker and author on corporate governance issues, and currently serves on the Independent Advisory Board to the NACD’s Corporate Directors Institute. In 1995, the National Law Journal named Ms. Gillan as one of the country’s top 40 attorneys under the age of 40, and in 1988, the same publication named her among the country’s top 50 women lawyers.
