NEW YORK, May 9, 2005 – Winston & Strawn LLP announced today that Edmund S. Cohen and Deborah J. Goldstein have joined the New York office as partners in the tax practice. Cohen and Goldstein join the firm from Coudert Brothers LLP, where Cohen was chairman of the global tax practice for nearly 20 years and Goldstein was a partner.

Cohen has served as chair of Coudert’s global tax practice since 1986. He and Goldstein have provided tax advice to some of the world’s leading financial services and industrial corporations. Their experience includes advice in corporate tax planning; acquisitions; dispositions; joint ventures and reorganizations; tax-advantaged international financings and derivative transactions; foreign tax credit optimization; Subpart F issues; and REITs. They also counsel a number of the world’s wealthiest families with respect to tax planning issues.

Cohen is a frequent speaker and writer on tax related issues. From 1976 to 1987, Cohen was an adjunct professor of law in the graduate tax program of New York University Law School where he taught a number of tax courses.
Cohen earned his juris doctor, cum laude, from Harvard Law School, his LL.M. in Taxation from New York University Law School and his bachelor’s degree, cum laude, from Dartmouth College. He is listed in Best Lawyers in America as one of the 50 leading tax lawyers in New York.
Goldstein earned her juris doctor, cum laude, from Harvard Law School, her LL.M. in Taxation from New York University Law School and her bachelor’s degree from Princeton University. She is presently the co-author of the BNA Portfolio on Doing Business in the People’s Republic of China, and is fluent in Chinese. From 1978 to 1980, Goldstein served as law clerk and attorney advisor for the Hon. C. Moxley Featherston, Chief Judge of the United States Tax Court.
