WASHINGTON, June 20 – LAWFUEL – The Law News Network — In recognition of its contributions to “real change and educational improvement in D.C. schools,” Sidley Austin Brown & Wood LLP will receive the 2005 Outstanding Achievement Award from the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs. The award
will be presented June 28 on behalf of the Lawyers’ Committee’s Public
Education Project.
Most recently, a Sidley team headed by partner Ronald S. Flagg, with
associates Patrick Linehan and Andrew Fausett, led a group of Washington, D.C.
area law firms, civic and business leaders in producing Separate and Unequal,
the State of the D.C. Public Schools Fifty Years after Brown and Bolling. The
report, released in March by Parents United for the D.C. Public Schools,
examines the condition of public education in the Nation’s Capitol five
decades after desegregation.
The study includes a series of photographs illustrating the physical
condition of the D.C. schools, and charts depicting major deficiencies in
basic D.C. school programs and resources compared to those available in
neighboring suburban school districts.
“We are very pleased to receive the Washington Lawyers’ Committee
Outstanding Achievement Award this year. This honor reflects Sidley’s
commitment to pro bono service, which in 2004 resulted in more than 41,000
hours of work contributed by attorneys throughout the firm,” said Carter
Phillips, a member of Sidley’s executive committee and managing partner of the
firm’s D.C. office.
Phillips noted also that Sidley was co-recipient of the D.C. Bar’s 2004
“Pro Bono Law Firm of the Year,” with more than 75 percent of the firm’s D.C.-
based attorneys participating in pro bono activities.
The Lawyers’ Committee provides more than 50,000 hours of high quality pro
bono services annually to individuals and groups in the D.C. area.
