SILICON VALLEY, August 15, 2005 - LAWFUEL - The Law News Network - Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP lawyers and staff in Silicon Valley raised more than $36,000 at a charity auction for Students Rising Above, an organization dedicated to assisting disadvantaged students. The Fourth Annual Charity Auction, held August 4, was part of the firm’s expanded commitment to help the communities in which it works. “We started this event four years ago because of our desire to give back to our community,” said Lynne Hermle, Silicon Valley employment law partner and chairwoman of the auction. “The auction is a creative way to raise money for great charitable causes while building team spirit and having fun.” Students Rising Above, created in 1998 by local news anchor Wendy Tokuda, is dedicated to helping high school students in the San Francisco Bay Area overcome great odds to pursue their education and their dreams. The students helped by the organization grow up in poverty, and many of them are homeless or have been abandoned by their parents. "The auction at Orrick had this warm family feel to it - but the generosity was what was so impressive," said Wendy Tokuda. "You just don't often see a group of professional colleagues from a large company having that much fun raising funds for charity. We are so grateful to the staff at Orrick for honoring Students Rising Above with this donation. It will make a big impact on the lives of a lot of teenagers in the Bay Area who will not be able to go to college without help." The most significant service Students Rising Above now provides to its students is a mentor who works with the students. Mentors help students with their financial aid packages, their academic and emotional adjustments to college and serve as a surrogate parent in times of crisis. The graduation rate of the students is increasing each year as a result of the individualized mentoring program. Orrick has been helping Students Rising Above since 2003. In 2004, Orrick sponsored the first fundraising gala. San Francisco office leader Joseph Malkin serves as an advisory board member for this community organization. Orrick’s other offices also have been involved in community programs this summer. In New York, Orrick sponsored a street fair for the tuition-free Children’s Storefront School, and in San Francisco, the firm held a kite-flying event for the Bessie Carmichael Elementary School. Offices in the Pacific Northwest and Orange County have contributed to food banks, and in Los Angeles, lawyers and staff helped build homes for the needy.
