Boston – (February 27, 2006) – Holland & Knight LLP today announced that Boston partner Dianne R. Phillips was elected to the Board of Directors of the Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders ("GLAD"). Founded in 1978, GLAD is New England's leading civil rights organization dedicated to ending discrimination based on sexual orientation, HIV status and gender identity and expression. Over the past 25 years, GLAD has represented many individuals seeking to end various acts of discrimination, from students who desired to attend their proms with the date of their choice to one of their most famous cases, Goodridge v. Department of Health, in which the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled that to deny a civil marriage license to two consenting adults of the same gender violated the Massachusetts State Constitution, thereby legalizing same sex civil marriage in Massachusetts. Phillips concentrates her practice in litigation, regulatory, energy, and environmental law. She helped organize the Holland & Knight Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Workgroup (“GLBT”) in the late 1990s, and serves as co-chair of the group firm wide. The group's mission is to develop and promote GLBT lawyers both internally and externally. Since being elected co-chair, the group has participated in a number of GLBT-focused activities including pro bono representation of HIV positive asylum seekers and leading the firm to sponsor the annual Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network ("GLSEN") "Respect Awards" in New York and in L.A.
